The certified nurse midwife (CNM) is an advanced practice nurse responsible for the assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation of nurse midwifery care delivered to antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients. Responsibilities include performing physical exams, collecting and documenting data, managing labor and spontaneous delivery, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering and scheduling laboratory studies and professional consultations, and prescribing appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM works closely with collaborating faculty physicians in a university group practice setting. Minimum qualifications include a Master’s degree in nursing, RN licensure in WV, Certified Nurse Midwife license in WV, and at least two years’ experience as a certified nurse midwife. Core duties include providing direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies, obtaining patient health histories, documenting findings, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, explaining procedures to patients and families, performing therapeutic procedures, formulating and implementing care plans, collaborating with physicians and nursing colleagues, documenting prescriptions, assessing patient status, initiating emergency interventions, and providing patient and family education. Physical requirements include medium work exertion, ability to use computer and communication devices, and capability to work various shifts and travel between facilities. The work environment includes exposure classifications per OSHA and TB standards. Skills required include maintaining credentialing and licensing, problem-solving, effective communication, and participation in on-call services. Scheduled weekly hours are 40, with exempt/non-exempt status in the United States.
