What you will do:

Nexus is the connection between a taxpayer and the state taxing authority. As a Nexus Auditor, you will examine taxpayer activities (person, property, or transaction) to determine if there’s a tax filing requirement in our state.

Primary job duties include:

  • Identifying, contacting, and responding to non-resident filers who may have Corporate Income and Sales/Use Tax nexus within South Carolina
  • Reviewing questionnaires submitted by taxpayers to determine whether a filing requirement exists
  • Preparing nexus assessment letters by obtaining returns or data to prepare the assessment
  • Performing research through court cases and other legal precedents to respond to technical inquiries from attorneys, CPAs, or taxpayers involving nexus issues
  • Managing caseloads in a timely manner

A bachelor’s degree and professional experience in accounting, auditing, finance, insurance, or tax preparation and/or analysis

Additional requirement:

  • A valid Driver’s License and reliable transportation are required for field work. (Mileage reimbursement provided)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects
  • Two years of experience with a minimum of 12 semester hours in accounting or auditing subjects and a master’s in accountancy or taxation, a Law Degree, or a CPA license
  • Extensive knowledge of tax law, regulations, SCDOR policies and procedures and legal research and techniques
  • Ability to confer, deal and negotiate effectively with taxpayers, their attorneys, CPAs or other representatives

Pay: $57,700.00 - $103,900.00 per year
