Responsible for creating the Pep Band; managing its operation in coordination with the Performing Arts Department and the Athletic Department; leading band rehearsals and performances; scheduling performances; managing equipment; managing uniforms; administrative work associated with maintaining lists of students; managing expenditures; and music library organization. Key Outcomes: 50% of Time: Directs Pep Band: Rehearse and Perform with Band. Chooses and acquires or arranges engaging music that students connect with, provides these charts and sometimes recordings to students. Teach this music to the students in weekly rehearsals for 3 hours. Perform music with students in multiple sporting events each semester, averaging 1 event/week; specific dates to be determined 1 semester prior with PA Chair and AD. Organizes opportunities for master classes or guest directors at least 1 time per semester in coordination with the manager. Assists with the curriculum development of the band. 25% of Time: Organizes and performs administrative tasks related to the band. Arranges weekly rehearsals. Arranges sports appearances and performance opportunities. Maintains band operation: to be any collection of students, faculty and staff dedicated to making music and raising energy at athletic games through playing popular and standard band repertoire, “scramble” techniques, cheering, field formation, marching, color guard and other “spirit-raising” tactics could be considered as part of the organization; Maintains an archive of band activity program through photos, videos, and press clips; Liaison with other scholastic bands and directors; Attends meetings of the Performing Arts Department; Works closely with athletic department, dance, and cheer coaches to coordinate performances and events; Ensures timely processing and payment of vendor invoices and service contracts. 25% of Time: Recruits and promotes the band. Recruits students and possibly staff/faculty members; Assists with Admissions Office and Performing Arts Department recruiting events; Assists in publicizing band events through press releases and other means. Perform other duties as assigned. Core Competencies include reliability, organization, communication skills, adaptability, follow through, customer service, initiative/personal leadership, and being a team player. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Terminal degree in music or related field preferred; Minimum of 3 years of experience in band leadership or music direction; Demonstrated experience as an established band musician and leader; Familiarity with various band styles, including marching bands, alternative bands, “scramble bands,” and pep bands; Flexible schedule to accommodate rehearsals and performances, including evenings and weekends; Proven ability to develop and grow a campus-based band program with a clear artistic and organizational vision; Teaching experience in higher education or equivalent instructional setting preferred; Ability to lift and transport up to thirty pounds.
